On celebration
Lately I've been giving a lot more thought about celebration. Often I think we overlook the value of celebration outside of birthdays, anniversaries and other calendar milestones. Especially in a work context, where you oven move from one goal to the next without much reward for what you've achieved.
Now that I've created a business that gives myself more flexibility, I am giving more thought to ways that I can not only celebrate important accomplishments, but also how I can make myself more grateful for what I've achieved to date. So far, the primary ways I've used the flexibilty that comes with running my own business are to spend time with my young son and to establish better exercise habits. Both of these are rewarding and important, but I wouldn't really call either of these things a celebration.
Going forward, I want to start taking the time to do fun things that I couldn't do without the flexibility I've earned through my work. Tomorrow will be my first experiment with this. I'm planning to take two days in the middle of the week to go skiing, where I should have the benefit of smaller crowds and lots of time to myself to think about not only my business, but also about how grateful I am for everything that I have in this moment in time.
As a result, this week I'm front-loading all of my client work and not doing much product or marketing work for my own products. We'll see if celebrating like this ends up being something that I can make a habit of going forward or if it is unworkable to take so much time out during the week from work.
