A new relationship with Twitter
I've been writing this personal blog long enough now that I've had time to develop my thoughts outside of the Twitter-sphere. (also outside of Medium and other platforms that I felt influenced my writing to a degree I'm not proud of) I'm definitely pleased with the results and I enjoy every Friday where I can look back at (usually) 5 posts that flesh out to some degree, one idea I've been thinking about and feel that is preserved for me to use or reflect on later.
I never felt this way about my writing on other platforms. Instead, I had this cringe feeling of - why did I write this? Who was I trying to copy in order to get more engagement? So, on a personal level, I'm happy that I now give myself the space to develop unique ideas on my own, without the influence of the internet crowd.
Now that I have this confidence in myself and my ability to generate ideas, I'm starting to think about how I might be able to feed that back into social media and have some interesting conversations related to my ideas. Part of me feels like I might instantly regret that, as the chance of finding something that is truly interesting while avoiding the confrontation and snarkiness that comes with social media platforms might be a long-shot. But I still have this desire to give my ideas a little push and get a few more visitors to my little personal site. Mostly out of curiosity, to see what other people think of my little experiment more than anything else.
The model I have in my head will probably be (mostly) 'broadcast-only' on Twitter. In other words, I will pick some thoughts from this blog, package them into small, Twitter-sized chunks, schedule them and only reply to comments during a set time once per day. (probably in the morning right after I finish my personal writing) This model may change and I'm still not 100% sure that I'm going to go ahead with it, but that's the direction I'm considering for giving my personal writing a bit of a push on Twitter.
